We have all about ‘rags to riches’ stories of sportsperson but none can be bigger than this cricketer, who dominated world and T20 cricket including the Indian Premier League (IPL) for more than a decade. From spending his childhood in non-descript slums to living in a Rs 20 crore palatial home now – which even houses a restaurant!

We are talking about the life story of ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle who shattered tons of records in his international and IPL career and turned 45 last week. Not many know about Gayle’s humble beginning from the slums of a place called Rollington Town on the outskirts of Kingston in Jamaica and about a mile to the west of famous Windies ground – Sabina Park.

The house where Gayle was raised with four other siblings is still standing there and looks the same as it was decades ago. A single-storey property made of blocks, with wooden boards or flapping cloths acting as windows, corrugated zinc for a roof, held in place with lumps of concrete. Even that was split into three sections and occupied by three families!

It’s amazing to see that from these beginning, Gayle became what is known as the ‘Universe Boss’ and currently has net worth of over Rs 200 crore – the ninth richest cricketer in the world. Gayle represented West Indies in 103 Test matches and scored 7,214 runs with 15 hundreds and 37 fifties with a top-score of 333. He played in 301 ODI matches and notched up 10,480 runs with 25 hundreds and 54 fifties and a top-score of 215. In 79 T20Is, Gayle managed to score 1,899 runs with 2 hundreds and 14 fifties.

In IPL, Gayle turned out for 3 team – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), seven seasons with Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore and 4 seasons with Shikhar Dhawan’s Punjab Kings or Kings XI Punjab. He managed to score 4,965 runs in IPL with six hundreds and 31 fifties at a strike-rate of 148.96.

Gayle now stays in a 3-storey palatial home in Kingston, Jamaica which is reportedly worth over Rs 20 crore. This luxurious home of Gayle has a bar, a sports zone, a gaming zone, and numerous swimming pools.

It also has an in-house mini-theatre where the cricketer enjoys with his family and friends. Gayle’s villa has nine bedrooms and the cricketer has also admitted that the home even has a strip club!

Gayle is married to Natasha Berridge, a Caribbean fashion designer, in 2009 and lives with his wife and daughter Kris-Allyna Gayle.
