Pakistan is giving protection to terrorist groups, instability may increase in South Asia; Big claim in MEMRI report
MEMRI Report On Pakistan: The Pakistan Army has been accused of harboring the terrorist organization Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP/ISIS-K) and then carrying out air strikes in Afghanistan in the name of counter-terrorism operation. A report by the US-based Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has claimed that Pakistan’s military actions could be part of a strategy to put pressure on the Taliban government and present its tough image to Western countries.
Drone activities intensify between Afghanistan and Pakistan
According to the report, on June 30, 2026, reports of cross-border drone activities between Afghanistan and Pakistan were reported. These activities were allegedly against ISKP bases. Such incidents have increased in recent years and Pakistan may reportedly use other terror networks to exert pressure against the Taliban in the region.
The MEMRI report claimed that alleged links between Pakistan’s military establishment and ISKP could increase instability in South Asia. The report alleged that Pakistan has been adopting the strategy of using terrorist groups in the context of India and Afghanistan for decades.
Strategy of pressure on Taliban and Baloch insurgent groups
The report said available evidence indicates that Pakistan may use ISKP as a strategic tool, rather than ideological support, to put pressure on the Afghan Taliban and Baloch insurgent groups. According to Pakistan’s revealing report, relations between Pakistan and Taliban have deteriorated after the return of Taliban to power in Afghanistan in August 2021. An increase in border clashes and attacks by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have raised Pakistan’s security concerns.
Baloch also intensified attacks
The report claimed that even mediation efforts by countries like Qatar, Türkiye and China have not been successful in reducing tensions between the two countries. Baloch armed groups have increased attacks on security forces and targets in Balochistan, especially those related to key projects, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). According to this, Beijing has made Pakistan aware of its concern regarding the security of Chinese citizens and projects, which has increased the pressure on Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

Special appeal made to western countries
The report claimed that Pakistan has adopted strict security measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan in response to the growing militancy, but this could increase discontent among local communities. Warning of ISKP’s growing interference, the report appealed to Western countries to link military and economic aid to Pakistan with concrete actions with independent monitoring against ISKP networks, so as to control regional instability and potential global security risks.
