Mercedes-Benz India's big statement on EV, UPI-like system should be started for EV charging

New Delhi Mercedes-Benz India, a manufacturing company famous for the luxury car segment in the automobile sector, has made a big statement about electric vehicles i.e. EVs. In which it has said that facilities should be made available to customers buying EVs. For this, it has supported the creation of a common platform for various service providers to get real time information on all charging stations.

Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer said the shared app will play a key role in enhancing customer convenience and boost EV acceptance in the country. Speaking to PTI, Iyer said there is a need to streamline the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. “Today, if you buy an electric car, you need three to four different apps on your phone. We are requesting the government to come up with something like a UPI-based system,” Iyer said.

EV convenience to the next level

He said India is a leader in digital technology, but when it comes to charging, there are still multiple apps. “They (apps) are not connected to each other, payment gateways are not integrated…if this can be resolved then EV convenience will be at the next level,” Iyer said.

No charging point operator

Giving an example, he said Mercedes customers in Germany and many parts of the world are able to pay for various services, including charging, from an app. “But in India we are not able to fully implement it because we don't have a single charge point operator who can integrate it,” Iyer said. He said the government will have to create a platform and then bring all the aggregators there.
