Meta decides to shut down Instagram’s end-to-end encrypted chats, users’ privacy at risk!

The end-to-end encrypted chat feature on Instagram will be discontinued after May 8, 2026. This information is given on the official help page of Instagram itself. This means that after this date, this security feature will no longer be available in Instagram direct messages.

This decision of Instagram is giving rise to a new debate regarding social media privacy. Many tech experts believe that in the coming times, social media platforms will try to strike a balance between security and moderation, due to which such changes may be seen.

What is end to end encryption?

End to end encryption is a technology in which no third person other than the sender and the recipient of the message can read it. Even the company running the platform cannot see those messages. In this technique, while sending the message, it is converted into a code and is decrypted only on the receiver’s device.

When did this feature come to Instagram?

Instagram started adding the end-to-end encryption feature to its messaging system around 2023. Initially this feature was not default for everyone but users had to turn it on separately.

Why did Meta take this decision?

Instagram’s parent company Meta says that very few people were using this feature. Therefore the company has decided to close it. The company is also sending notifications to users in advance so that they can download their encrypted chats and media files if they wish.

What will be the impact on users?

Messages sent on Instagram after May 8, 2026 will not be end-to-end encrypted. That means technically these messages will be processed on the platform’s servers. Although companies usually claim that the security and privacy of users’ data is taken care of.
