American court gets angry on Meta, imposes fine of Rs 3100 crore on charges of playing with children’s safety

Meta Fined 375 Million Dollar: Social media giant Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is currently facing a serious legal crisis. A jury in the US state of New Mexico has given an important and historic verdict and imposed a huge fine of $ 375 million (about Rs 3100 crore) on the company.

The court clearly stated in its decision that the company hid the possible dangers related to the safety and mental health of children and gave priority to commercial profits. The case lasted approximately seven weeks, hearing testimony from numerous witnesses and experts. Government lawyers argued in court that the Mark Zuckerberg-led company was already aware that its platforms could prove harmful to children.

Facebook-Insta dangerous for children

Despite this, the company did not share these risks publicly nor provide adequate warnings. The prosecution said that Meta gave more importance to profits than safety measures. The jury also found that Meta concealed information that its platform exposed children to the risk of sexual exploitation, which could have a serious impact on their mental health.

Besides, the allegation against the company that it presented misleading and false information was also proved. According to the court, Meta took advantage of the children’s young age and inexperience while pursuing unfair business policies, which was considered a serious violation.

Accused of repeated violation of rules

The judgment also said that this was not just a one-time mistake, but there were repeated violations of rules by the company. The jury found that Meta violated consumer protection laws thousands of times. Separate fines were assessed for each violation, resulting in a total fine of $375 million.

According to experts, this decision is an important message for the entire tech industry that ignoring the safety of children can lead to serious consequences. Due to this, more strict rules may be imposed on social media companies in future. At present, no detailed response has been received from Meta on this decision, but it is believed that the company may challenge this decision in the higher court.
