Tech company Metahas taken a big decision and this decision of the company has given a big blow to all the social media users. Web users will shift directly to Facebook
After April 2026, if someone opens messenger.com, the user will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages. That means you have to use Facebook’s web interface to continue chatting on desktop. However, the Messenger app for mobile users will continue as before. For people who have deactivated their Facebook account, and were using the web version of Messenger, the options will now be limited. Such users will now be able to communicate only through the mobile app. Chat history can be backed up with a PIN provided to keep it safe and you will also have the option to reset your PIN if you forget it. The desktop app is already closed
The company did not take this decision suddenly. The company has also discontinued separate Messenger desktop apps previously released for Windows and Mac. At that time too, desktop users were diverted to Facebook’s web interface. This suggests that Messenger’s standalone website may be shut down in the future. Tech reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi was the first to share information about this change. Now the company is notifying users about this through pop-up notifications on the website and app.
What is the company’s new strategy?
Messenger was launched in 2008 as a version of Facebook Chat. In 2011, the platform was launched as a separate app, and in 2024, the messaging feature was removed from the Facebook app and users were instructed to use a separate app called Messenger. But in the last few years it is seen that this strategy of the company has changed. Since 2023, Facebook has started adding Messenger features to its main app once again.

Many users do not agree with the company’s decision
Now the decision to shut down the website is being considered as part of a wider strategy under which the company wants to consolidate its messaging system. However, there are many users who do not agree with this decision of the company and expressed their displeasure about this decision. This decision is going to be very important especially for people who have closed their Facebook account but are still using Messenger Web. For them, this step may seem inconvenient rather than convenient.
