Meta Purge 2026: 1.1 crore accounts wiped from Facebook and Instagram Why did Meta take such a big step?
News India Live, Digital Desk: Social media giant Meta has carried out one of the biggest crackdown ever against online fraud and crime. The company has revealed that 10.9 million (about 11 million) Facebook and Instagram accounts have been permanently deleted in the last one year. All these accounts were found to be linked to ‘Criminal Scam Centres’. Why did Meta take such a big step? According to Meta, these accounts were not only spreading misleading information but were also involved in activities like financial fraud and data theft among the people. Apart from this: 15.9 crore fraud advertisements have also been blocked. Romance Scam: More than 15,000 assets of people defrauding Japanese women or other fake identities were destroyed. Global campaign: More than 1.5 lakh suspicious accounts were disabled in an operation conducted in collaboration with Thailand Police and US investigative agencies (FBI & DOJ). Now AI will do your ‘Rakhwali’ (New Safety Rules): Meta has implemented new AI-based security rules to avoid such scams in future: Scam Detection Tools: New AI tools have been activated on Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger which will detect suspicious activities and send alerts immediately. Ban on suspicious recommendations: AI will now prevent those adult accounts from getting suggestions to teens who may be included in lists like ‘People You May Know’ Strict age verification: With the help of AI, the age of the account holder is now being accurately estimated so that children can be protected from online threats. Hidden Words: Through this feature, comments on those accounts which send objectionable language or scam links will now be auto-filtered.
