Attention Spying is happening through fake WhatsApp app, Meta warns users

Meta has introduced new tools to further strengthen security for its messaging platform WhatsApp. These also include device linkage warning feature along with scam and fraud alert system. This feature alerts users immediately when a suspicious person tries to access their account remotely.

However, cyber criminals are constantly adopting new methods and trying to steal user information using spyware. In this context, Meta has recently issued a warning that some users have downloaded fake WhatsApp app. According to reports, this spyware was mainly active in Italy and targeted around 200 Android and iPhone users.

How does a fake app work?
According to Meta, this fake WhatsApp app looks like the real app, but silently infects users’ devices. People who download it put their accounts, chats and personal data at risk.

Meta took immediate action, logged out the affected users from their accounts and sent them a direct warning about the security risks. The company clarified that there is no technical weakness in the WhatsApp platform in this incident. This only happened due to users installing unofficial and malicious apps.

WhatsApp took action against spyware firm
WhatsApp has taken action against Italian spyware firm Asigint. This company is controlled by Sio Spa and it is believed that it is the main source of this fake app. The case is part of increased scrutiny on spyware operators and is being seen as a serious security threat.

Meta warns users to download apps only from official stores and avoid any suspicious links or third-party sources. Also, it is important to keep security settings updated and enable two-factor authentication.
