Mexico Violence: Mexico The US Defense Ministry announced that El Mencho, one of the world’s most wanted drug traffickers and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has been killed during a military operation. El Mencho’s real name was Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes.
After his death, violence has spread in many states of Mexico. According to reports, burnt vehicles and armed men are visible on the roads and highways. This violence is being seen especially in the state of Jalisco.
How did El Mencho die?
According to the Defense Ministry, El Mencho died of injuries sustained during a military raid in the western state of Jalisco. He died while being transferred by air to Mexico City.

El Mencho’s crime organization, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has become Mexico’s most powerful organized crime syndicate over the past decade and also plays a key role in trafficking illegal drugs into the United States. Following the outbreak of violence, President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the federal government is in full contact with state governments. Video that went viral on social media showed plumes of smoke billowing over the tourist town of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, and people were seen running to the airport. In the state capital Guadalajara, vehicles were set on fire and parked in the middle of the road.
Who killed El Mencho?
This military operation against El Mencho took place at a time when US President Donald Trump’s administration had put pressure on the Sheinbaum government to increase action against drug trafficking. America had also threatened to intervene directly in Mexico. The United States had offered a reward of $15 million to anyone providing information leading to the arrest or conviction of El Mencho. He was accused of sending drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl to North America.
What was CJNG a terrorist organization?
Last year, CJNG was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration. US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau called Oseguera’s death a “significant achievement” for the US, Mexico and all of Latin America.
What did America say?
The US State Department has warned US citizens to remain in place in several Mexican states, amid widespread violence in Jalisco and other CJNG areas. This warning was for the states of Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon. Canada has also advised its citizens to stay at home in Puerto Vallarta and to reduce visibility in Jalisco.
What did India say?
The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued a security advisory for all Indian citizens living there by tweeting. The Embassy has said that due to the ongoing security operations in the country, road blockades and criminal activities are being seen at many places.
According to the advisory, Indian citizens living in Jalisco state (Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara regions), Tamaulipas state (Reynosa and other municipalities), Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon states should remain in safe places until further notification.
The embassy has advised citizens to stay away from areas of police activity, be alert to their surroundings, take shelter in a safe place and avoid going out unless it is urgent.
Under Oseguera’s leadership, the CJNG transformed from a regional group to an international trafficking network. The organization was known for its use of heavy weapons, military-style convoys, and public displays of violence to intimidate opponents and authorities. Although this Sinaloa Cartel, which was once led by Juaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, was not that famous at the international level.
