Michael B. Jordan & Austin Butler’s Miami Vice ’85 Release date Delayed
Universal Pictures has shifted one of its most anticipated upcoming tentpoles on the release calendar. Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler’s Miami Vice ’85 will now arrive in cinemas significantly later than originally planned.
Miami Vice ’85 delayed for nearly a year
As first reported by DeadlineUniversal Pictures has pushed back the release of Miami Vice ’85 by close to twelve months. Joseph Kosinski’s reboot, headlined by Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, will now arrive in theatres on May 19, 2028, rather than August 6, 2027. Disney’s Lilo & Stitch 2 follows seven days later to launch Memorial Day weekend.
Anthony Yerkovich’s original Miami Vice series first aired in 1984, featuring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives operating in Miami, Florida. The show currently sits at a 72% critic score and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Declining ratings ended its run after five seasons.
The series collected several Emmy wins across art direction, cinematography, sound editing and supporting actor during its broadcast. Johnson took home a Golden Globe for Best Actor — Drama. Jan Hammer’s theme composition earned two Grammy wins in 1985.
Michael Mann’s 2006 theatrical remake cast Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Sonny and Rico. That feature carries a 47% critic score and 43% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Box office returns reached $164 million against a reported production budget of $135 million.
Universal has now handed directing duties to Joseph Kosinski, whose credits include Tron: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick and F1. Dan Gilroy of Andor and Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Eric Warren Singer are penning the screenplay. Jordan steps into the role of Ricardo Tubbs, while Butler takes on Sonny Crockett.
Jordan claimed the Best Actor Oscar in 2025 for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Butler secured a Golden Globe through his portrayal of the King of Rock & Roll in Elvis. His performance in Dune: Part Two also landed him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Saturn Awards.
