The milestone was reached after his posthumous track Chicago, from the 2014 album Xscape, entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 30. The entry marked his 52nd solo appearance on the chart, beginning with his first in 1972 with Got to Be There. From that early debut as a teenager to his latest posthumous chart success, Jackson’s career reflects one of the longest and most consistent chart histories in modern music.
Streaming performance played a major role in the song’s renewed success. Chicago recorded 10.7 million official US streams during the final week of May, showing a 30 percent increase compared to the previous week. Chicago was originally released in 2014 as part of the Xscape project, which featured unreleased material completed after Jackson’s death in 2009.
