Michael Vaughan criticizes India’s captains Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, calls for a selfish batter like Cheteshwar Pujara
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that India are lacking attacking captain for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He rated Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah as captains. The speedster will lead India in the series opener in Perth as Rohit is still in India. Sharma and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, were blessed with a baby boy. Vaughan mentioned about India’s two back-to-back series wins in Australia and the current team.
He highlighted that India performed well under Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy and the coaching of Ravi Shastri. Vaughan called Rohit a ‘laid-back’ player and Bumrah a ‘lovely, smiley bloke’.
“When India won in 2018-19 and 2020-21, Virat Kohli was leading the side first time, and Ajinkya Rahane was the leader in the second,” Vaughan wrote. “Ravi Shastri was the head coach and the visitors atleast had one leader. This time, Gautam Gambhir is the head of the coaching staff. For me, Rohit is a laidback player and Bumrah is a smiling bloke. They are missing that aggression, which is needed to beat Australia.”
Vaughan felt that the India National Cricket Team would need someone like like Cheteshwar Pujara who can frustrate the bowlers .
“They also need someone who can play Cheteshwar Pujara’s role. When the teams won in Australia, they had a batter, who grinds the bowlers down, forcing them to bowl fourth and fifth spells. Pujara did it brilliantly. Alastair Cook was England’s hero in 2010-11. You need stubborn and selfish batting.”
