Girona FC and manager Michel Sanchez have parted ways with immediate effect following the club’s relegation from La Liga. The 50-year-old Spanish tactician, who previously led Girona to historic heights, is now the leading candidate to become the new head coach of Dutch giants Ajax.

Míchel Sánchez will not continue at Girona FC.

Just two seasons ago, under Míchel’s guidance, Girona achieved a fairy-tale campaign. They finished third in La Liga during the 2023-24 season, qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in club history, and even defeated Barcelona twice. However, the 2025-26 season turned into a nightmare. Girona were relegated on the final day of the season after a 1-1 draw against Elche.
