Europe’s dream became a journey of death; 22 migrants lost their lives near Greece, smugglers threw their bodies into the sea

Greece Migrant Tragedy: The Mediterranean Sea has once again become a turning point for migrants hoping to seek refuge in Europe. At least 22 migrants have died in a rubber boat off the coast of Greece. According to survivors, the boat left Libya for Greece from the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk on March 21. During the journey the migrants lost their way and remained stranded at sea without food and water for the next six days, causing many to die.

The most horrifying truth of this accident came to light when the rescued migrants narrated their ordeal to the authorities. Survivors reported that the bodies of those who died were thrown into the sea on the orders of smugglers. The Greek Coast Guard has arrested two South Sudanese men (aged 19 and 22) on suspicion of human trafficking.

Rescue operation and current situation Following the accident, an EU agency ship from Frontex has safely rescued 26 people, including a woman and a minor, off the island of Crete. The two survivors have been admitted to a hospital in Heraklion in serious condition.

Increasing crisis and strict rules

According to the latest United Nations (UN) data, at least 107 migrants have died or gone missing in Greece’s maritime zones so far in 2025. These figures highlight the extent to which people are forced to take risks in trying to reach Europe. The number of migrants, especially from Libya, has seen a rapid increase in recent months, which has made the situation more serious.

In response to this increasing pressure, the Greek government took a major step in mid-2025 by temporarily suspending the processing of asylum applications for three months. The government believed that this step would curb illegal migration to some extent. However, despite this decision, the migration of migrants towards Europe does not seem to have stopped.
