Millions of people gathered at the last farewell of Iran’s former supreme leader Khamenei, Tehran echoed with slogans of ‘revenge-revenge’
New Delhi: An unprecedented crowd was seen on the streets of Tehran on Saturday for the last farewell of Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Lakhs of people reached the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosallah complex in the capital to pay their last respects. Men, women and children present in black clothes were seen paying tribute to Khamenei while mourning as per religious traditions.
The coffins of Khamenei and other members of his family have been kept in the Grand Mosallah for the last glimpse. On Friday, foreign delegations had paid homage, while on Saturday, darshan arrangements were made for common citizens.
Political slogans echoed amid security
Strict security arrangements have been made in Tehran. People are being allowed entry only after checking with metal detectors. To provide relief from the scorching heat, volunteers are providing water and other necessary facilities.

The final procession will pass through many cities
According to the government schedule, Khamenei’s funeral procession will pass through several major cities, including Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and Mashhad. On July 9, he will be laid to rest near the shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown Mashhad. Officials say that crores of people are likely to participate in the entire mourning program.
Tension increased regarding Hormuz and America
Amidst the funeral, Iran has once again shown a tough stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said that the security of this strategic sea route is the responsibility of the coastal countries and any external military intervention could have serious consequences.
On the other hand, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf said that America will have to accept the changed circumstances of the region. He believes that after the recent events the situation in West Asia is not the same as before.
Discussion increased due to Trump’s statement
US President Donald Trump claimed that in view of Khamenei’s funeral, America decided not to take any military action for a week. He also said that Iran is ready for talks.
