Minions & Monsters’ CinemaScore Is a Huge Win After Record Rotten Tomatoes Score

Illumination’s latest Minions & Monsters just hit a major milestone that no other film in the franchise has ever reached. The animated sequel’s opening-day audience reception and critical scores paint a promising picture for its box office run.

Minions & Monsters’ CinemaScore bodes well for box office

Illumination’s Minions & Monsters earned an A- CinemaScore from opening-day audiences, according to CinemaScore. The film also holds a 90% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 102 critics. Additionally, Metacritic assigned the film a score of 67 out of 100 from 25 reviews.

The A- CinemaScore reflects strong audience approval polled directly from opening-night moviegoers. CinemaScore has measured movie appeal among theater audiences since 1978. The grade signals positive word of mouth heading into the lucrative Independence Day holiday weekend.

The Despicable Me franchise has consistently delivered massive global box office returns over its history. Multiple installments in the series have approached or surpassed the billion-dollar mark worldwide. Strong audience reception typically drives repeat viewings for family-oriented animated releases like this one.

Minions & Monsters grossed $14 million on its opening day in the United States and Canada. The film is projected to earn around $80 million domestically over its five-day holiday frame. International projections sit at approximately $90 million, bringing the estimated global opening to $170 million.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus states the Minions deliver their mayhem to Hollywood history in an affectionate sendup of moviemaking magic. Clint Worthington of RogerEbert.com gave the film three and a half out of four stars. Eric Goldman of IGN scored it 8 out of 10 and wrote: “Using the Minions to create an ode to early Hollywood that’s also an overall love letter to movies themselves and the power of storytelling is a surprising yet welcome turn of events.” Drew Taylor of TheWrap called it “a love letter to classic Hollywood.”

The film currently stands as Illumination’s highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Its strong CinemaScore suggests the film could enjoy sustained box office legs beyond its opening weekend.

Minions & Monsters is now playing in theaters.
