Minor girl jumps into Mahanadi River in Sambalpur, goes missing

Sambalpur: A 16-year-old girl went missing reportedly after jumping into the Mahanadi River from the bridge at Chaurpur locality in Sambalpur area this evening.

Sources said that the minor girl, a class X student, reportedly left the house in the evening saying she was going to a relative’s house for some work.

However, she went to the bridge over the Mahanadi River at Chaurpur along with a boy and was standing on the bridge before jumping into the river and going missing at around 8 PM.

On being alerted by the passersby, police reached the spot along with the fire fighters and started a rescue operation. However, the rescue operation was hampered due to the strong current of the river water as flood water is being released from the Hirakud Dam.

Police also have launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain the identity of the youth with whom the girl had reached the bridge before jumping into the river and the exact reason what prompted her to jump into the river.
