Mirabai Chanu wants to complete the unfinished task of winning a medal in the Asian Games.
Chanu described the beginning of Khelo India Tribal Games as an important platform for the players.
Raipur. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu said after the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) that the Asian Games are very important for me personally because my work there is not done. The level of competition in the Asian Games is very high, making it more challenging and exciting. Chanu’s journey in the Asian Games has been full of ups and downs.
He finished ninth on his debut at the 2014 Asian Games, while a back injury forced him to miss the 2018 edition. She came closest to a medal at the 2022 Asian Games, but a hip injury hampered her campaign at the crucial time and she missed out on a medal by a narrow margin.
Now the 31-year-old Chanu is preparing for possibly her final attempt at the continental competition and aims to make up for the only blemish in her illustrious career. It will be a big challenge for him to balance his weight between the Commonwealth Games to be held in July-August this year and the Asian Games starting from September 19.
She will compete in the 48kg category at the Commonwealth Games, while returning to the 49kg category for the Asian Games. She said that I will keep my weight within 48 kg till the Commonwealth Games, but after two months there are the Asian Games which are in the 49 kg category, so I will have to make changes again.
Chanu lauded the launch of Khelo India Tribal Games, calling it an important platform for players from remote areas. He said that as a player, it is a proud moment for me that the government is giving priority to initiatives like KITG. This competition will give a platform to players coming from remote areas to showcase their talent. I have seen many such examples across the country, especially in the North-East and other tribal areas, where talent is there but due to lack of such platforms it does not blossom.
