Missed flight due to train delays; Passenger directly goes to court, orders compensation of 1.3 lakhs

Guwahati : A consumer court in Odisha in a case of missed flight due to railway delay Indian RailwaysAn individual has been ordered to pay compensation of Rs.1.3 lakh. The incident took place in Odisha’s Balangir district.

A person named Chandi Prasad Khamari filed a complaint that his train was delayed by around seven hours in 2024. Due to this delay, they could not catch their already booked flight. Khamari had purchased a train ticket on 23rd August 2024 for journey from Jharsuguda to Howrah. As per the railway schedule, this train was expected to depart from Jharsuguda at 7:50 PM and reach Howrah at 3:55 AM. Based on all the schedules, Khamari had booked a flight ticket to Guwahati, the flight of which was scheduled to take off at 8:05 AM.

Meanwhile, he had left an ample gap of nearly four hours between the scheduled arrival time of the train and the departure of the plane. The train left Jharsuguda itself with a delay of two hours and finally reached Kolkata around seven hours behind schedule. As a result, they missed their flight. Khamari said that he complained to the railway administration several times. But, they did not get any response. They were forced to cancel their flight tickets, causing them to suffer huge financial losses.

What is the argument of the railways?

In its defence, the railway administration argued that there was no guarantee that the train would run on time. He cited operational reasons as the reason for the delay on several occasions. They are not solely responsible for the journey; Therefore, they cannot be held fully responsible. However, the consumer court rejected this argument raised by the Railways.

Summer special train will run

On the other hand, railway administration has announced special trains in view of summer vacations. However, in this, the picture of ignoring the passengers of Maharashtra has come to light. A total of 577 summer special flights have been planned from Pune division, out of which as many as 523 flights are for foreign states. However, as only 54 rounds have been reserved for intra-state travel, the passengers are expressing their displeasure.
