Mitchell Marsh’s great storm, Rohit Sharma’s record shattered in T20 World Cup, Australia’s historic victory

New Delhi. The manner in which Australia defeated Oman in the last match of the group stage of T20 World Cup 2026, surprised the cricket world. The match was one-sided, but the real headlines were collected by Australian captain Mitchell Marsh, whose stormy batting not only ended the match but also created a stir in the record books.
After losing the toss and coming to bat first, Oman’s team could not stand against the spin of Adam Zampa. Zampa’s accurate and killer bowling reduced Oman’s innings to just 104 runs in 16.2 overs. The target was small, but Australia proved it to be even smaller. The Kangaroo team achieved the target of 105 runs in just 9.4 overs and ended their campaign with a bang.

Marsh was the hero of this victory, who played an unbeaten inning of 64 runs on 33 balls. His batting showed an excellent combination of aggression, confidence and leadership. The most special thing in this innings was the storm of powerplay, adorned with 7 fours and 4 sky-high sixes. Marsh scored 53 runs in the first six overs. This was the achievement that took him to new heights in the record list.

This is the second highest individual score during the powerplay in the history of T20 World Cup. Earlier in this list, former India captain Rohit Sharma was at second position, who scored 51 runs in the first six overs against Australia in 2024. Marsh achieved this feat by leaving Hitman behind and proved how dangerous he can be on the big stage.

The record of making the highest score in the powerplay is still in the name of Netherlands batsman Stephen Myburgh. He scored 57 runs in the first six overs against Ireland in 2014. Despite 12 years having passed, no batsman has been able to cross this figure. Marsh definitely came close, but the record is currently safe in Myburgh’s name.

Names of other Indian batsmen are also included in this list. KL Rahul scored 50 runs in the powerplay against Scotland in 2021, while Ishan Kishan scored a half-century in the first six overs against New Zealand in 2026. Legends like Quinton de Kock, Jason Roy, Chris Gayle and Mahela Jayawardene have also made it to this prestigious list.

This innings of Marsh was not just a flamboyant innings but also a message. The Australian team has shown how it puts pressure on the opposition team in big tournaments. Achieving the target in 9.4 overs is proof that the team is redefining aggressive cricket.

  • This group stage match may have been a formality, but Marsh’s innings will be remembered for a long time. Records are broken and made, but the manner in which this feat was accomplished has added a new chapter in the history of the T20 World Cup.
