A new scientific research has claimed to reduce the incidents of fire and explosion in lithium-ion batteries used in mobile phones. This research is considered to be one of the most important discoveries ever made regarding battery safety, because incidents of mobile battery blasts were continuously increasing concern in recent years.

Big solution from small change in electrolyte

Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have made an important improvement in battery technology. Scientists have made slight changes in the electrolyte of the battery and used two special solvents. This small change reduces the risk of battery overheating and fire to a great extent.

According to researchers, the electrolyte of the battery plays an important role in its safety and performance. In conventional lithium-ion batteries, this part is the most sensitive, from where thermal runaway i.e. uncontrolled heat starts.

Shocking difference revealed in lab test

When the battery prepared with the new technology was tested in the lab, its results were surprising. While the temperature reached 555 degrees Celsius in the normal lithium-ion battery, the temperature rise in the battery with modified electrolyte was only 3.5 degrees Celsius.

This difference clearly shows how effective the new technology can be in protecting the battery from overheating. This overheating further causes fire or battery explosion.

There will be no impact on performance

Another big relief regarding this research is that scientists say that this change does not have any negative impact on the performance of the battery. That means the charging capacity, backup and life of the battery remains the same, but the level of safety increases manifold.

Experts believe that if this technology is adopted at the commercial level, then smartphones, laptops and electric devices can become much safer in the future. This will not only increase the confidence of users, but can also significantly reduce incidents like mobile battery blasts.
