In a match that many fans and experts are calling a “cynical spectacle,” Australian player Nick Kyrgios defeated women’s world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-3 in an exhibition match in Dubai on December 28, 2025.
The event held at a sold-out Coca-Cola Arena was marketed as a modern “Battle of the Sexes.” However, it drew heavy criticism for its gimmicky rules designed to level the playing field.
Sabalenka’s side of the court was made 9% smaller and both players were allowed only one serve per point instead of the usual two.
Critics argued the event was more of a money grab” by the players’ shared agency rather than a serious sporting contest.
During the match, the atmosphere was more like a show than a competition featuring under-arm serves and Sabalenka dancing during timeouts. Despite the uneven rules, Kyrgios used his powerful serve to control the game.
Afterward, he admitted to the pressure, saying, “Honestly, it was really tough match. She is a hell of a player and such a great champion,” while also noting, “I would be lying if I said I’m not a bit nervous.”
Sabalenka, who laughed and joked throughout the match viewed it as a fun challenge before the new season.
She shared that she “really enjoyed the show” and felt like she “put up a great fight,” even hinting at a rematch by adding, “next time I play him I’m going to know the tactics and it’s going to be a better match for sure.”
While the players hailed the event as a “great stepping stone for the sport,” many tennis purists remain unimpressed by the exhibition’s lack of true competitive stakes.
