Modern rain water harvesting system will be built in 75 schools of Delhi, 50 crore liters of water will be saved every year.

Delhi government has taken a big step to promote water conservation. The government has decided to re-develop and modernize rainwater harvesting systems in 75 CM Shree schools. Giving information, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that through this project the capacity to conserve about 50 crore liters of rain water every year will be developed. The government says that the aim of this initiative is not only to conserve water but also to increase environmental awareness among students in schools. Collecting rain water through rain water harvesting system equipped with modern technology will help in improving the ground water level.

A high-level meeting was organized in this regard, in which the officials presented a detailed report of the project. In the meeting, information was given about the current status of rain water harvesting systems already present in schools, the shortcomings present in them and the action plan prepared for their improvement. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the objective of this project is to increase the capacity of rain water conservation and make water management in school campuses more effective. The government claims that through this initiative, about 50 crore liters of rain water can be conserved every year.

CM Rekha Gupta has said that Delhi receives an average of 775 mm rainfall and about 2 lakh liters of water can be conserved every year from a roof of about 2500 square feet. According to the government, this quantity is considered sufficient to meet the annual needs of a five-member family. Keeping this in mind, Delhi Government has decided to develop modern rain water harvesting system in 75 CM Shri schools. Under the scheme, rooftop rain water harvesting model will be installed in every school, so that rain water collection and groundwater recharge can be done in a better way. The government aims to develop the capacity to conserve about 50 crore liters of rain water every year through this project. For this, in the recently held meeting, the officials had given detailed information about the status of the existing system, its shortcomings and the action plan prepared for its improvement.

What is the government’s claim?

The Delhi government has claimed that around 13 crore liters of rain water can be conserved every year from the roofs of government schools alone. For this purpose, a plan has been made to develop modern rain water harvesting system in 75 CM Shri schools. According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the model of non-governmental organization “Ehsaas” will be adopted in schools. This model was approved by Delhi Jal Board in the year 2021. According to the government, this model is considered to be low cost, less space and almost zero maintenance. Under this, the rain water coming from the roofs of schools will be filtered and connected to the storage system and borewell. This process will promote groundwater recharge and will also help in reactivating dry borewells.
