Modi Cabinet: Kerala will be known as ‘Keralaam’! Modi cabinet approved the name change
New Delhi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Tuesday said the Union Cabinet has approved the state government’s proposal to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’. This decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was the first meeting of the Cabinet held at the new Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) complex ‘Seva Tirtha’.
Vaishnav said that in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, the proposal to change the name of Kerala state to ‘Keralaam’ was approved. After the approval of the Union Cabinet, President Draupadi Murmu will send the Bill titled Kerala (Change of Name) Bill, 2026 to the Kerala State Assembly for consideration under the provision of Article 3 of the Constitution of India.
According to the official release, after receiving the views of the Kerala Assembly, the Government of India will seek the President’s recommendation to introduce the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 in Parliament to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’. The Kerala Assembly had passed a resolution to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ on June 24, 2024.
The resolution said, “The name of our state is ‘Keralaam’ in Malayalam language. States were formed on the basis of language on November 1, 1956. Kerala Piravi Day is also celebrated on 1 November.” It said, ”Since the time of the national freedom struggle, there has been a strong demand for the formation of a united Kerala for the Malayalam speaking people. But in the first schedule of the Constitution, the name of our state is only ‘Kerala’.
This Assembly unanimously appeals to the Central Government to take immediate steps in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution to change the name of the State to ‘Kerala’.” Thereafter, the Government of Kerala requested the Central Government to take necessary steps to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution to change the name of ‘Kerala’ to ‘Kerala’ in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution.
Article 3 of the Constitution provides for change in the names of existing states. According to Article 3, Parliament can change the name of any state by law. The provision of Article 3 also states that no Bill for this purpose shall be introduced in either House of Parliament without the recommendation of the President.
According to this, if the proposal contained in the Bill affects the area, boundaries or name of any State, the Bill must be referred by the President to the Legislature of that State for expressing its views thereon within the specified period or within such further period as may be allowed by the President.
The matter of changing the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ was considered in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and with the approval of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the draft Memorandum before the Cabinet on changing the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ was sent to the Department of Legal Affairs and Legislative Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice for their comments. The Department of Legal Affairs and Legislative Department of the Ministry of Law and Justice has agreed to the proposal to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’.
Approval for development of civil enclave worth Rs 1,677 crore at Srinagar airport
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the creation of a ‘civil enclave’ at Srinagar airport at a cost of Rs 1,677 crore. According to an official statement, the civil enclave project will be spread over 73.18 acres and the new terminal building will come up on 71,500 square metres. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced the approval for the project at a press conference after the Union Cabinet meeting.
The estimated cost of this project is Rs 1,677 crore. The new terminal building will be designed to handle 2,900 passengers at peak hours and will have an annual capacity of one crore passengers. The government also said that the project is expected to create employment opportunities and promote investment.
