Why is the power of state leaders increasing in Modi Era? Are Yogi, Samrat, Shubhendu and DK the new faces of the 2029 fight?

The last decade or so is seen as the ‘Modi era’ in Indian politics, where at the national level Prime Minister Narendra Modi The threat and organizational expansion of BJP has been the biggest political factor. But the interesting thing is that during this period, the power of some regional leaders (province leaders) within both BJP and Congress has also increased rapidly. This is not the story of the rise of earlier regional parties like RJD, SP, BSP, TMC, SAD, NCP, DMK, AIADMK, BJD and others, but of the emergence of leaders within national parties who have electoral face, social equations and organizational strength in their respective states.

Why is the power of regional satraps increasing?

In fact, in the Modi era, elections have now become presidential style, different from before, but state elections are still influenced by local leadership, caste equations and regional issues. BJP is expanding in those states where strong local faces are needed. On the other hand, Congress is also dependent on local leaders in those states where its central leadership alone cannot guarantee electoral victory. This is the reason that along with the national leadership, the role of strong regional leaders is increasing.

In the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and the assembly elections to be held before that, both BJP and Congress will need such leaders who can contribute significantly to the seats in their respective states. Know who is such a leader?

Yogi: The wonderful face of Hindutva and administrative control

Yogi Adityanath, head of Gorakhnath Math and Chief Minister of UP, is counted among the most influential regional leaders of BJP. His hold in Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest number of Lok Sabha seats in the country, is an important part of the BJP’s election strategy. Yogi has created his own political base by combining law and order, anti-Romeo, infrastructure, bulldozer nationalism and Hindutva politics.

The socio-religious heritage of Gorakhnath Math and his consistently active administrative style as Chief Minister have given him an independent political identity within the state. For BJP, strong performance in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2027 will decide the path to 2029 and in such a situation, Yogi’s role will not be limited to Chief Minister only. Even within the party, he is counted among the leaders with a large support base, whose popularity is visible even beyond the boundaries of the state.

Samrat Chaudhary: The unique face of social engineering

The importance of Samrat Chaudhary has continuously increased in the state leadership of Bihar BJP. His hold among the backward classes, especially the Kushwaha community, is considered an important part of BJP’s social expansion strategy in the state. Bihar’s politics has long been based on caste equations and BJP needs strong local leadership here.

Samrat Chaudhary has tried to strengthen the organization of BJP up to village and district level. To create its own independent social identity in a state dominated by Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav and the Lalu family, BJP needs a face who can connect various backward classes. His performance in the upcoming assembly elections can affect BJP’s position in Bihar to a great extent.

Shubhendu Adhikari: Saffron party’s biggest hope in Bengal

Subhendu Adhikari has emerged as one of the strongest regional faces of BJP in West Bengal. Shubhendu, who was once among the prominent leaders of Trinamool Congress, had proved his political ability by defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. Due to his close understanding of Bengal politics and his hold on the local organization, BJP considers him to be the main face of the possibilities of change of power in the state.

As the leader of opposition in the Assembly, Shubhendu has been continuously cornering the state government. BJP’s future in Bengal will largely depend on how strong a local leadership it is able to establish in comparison to Mamata Banerjee. In such a situation, the role of Shubhendu is going to be very important till 2026 assembly elections and then till 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

D.K. Shivkumar: Congress’s biggest ‘crisis manager’

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar is among those Congress leaders who have proved their ability in both organization and resource management. His role in the return of Karnataka Congress to power has received wide acceptance within the party. His strong hold on influence and organization in the Vokkaliga community of the state makes him a major regional satrap of the Congress.

Karnataka is the most important state in South India for Congress. In such a situation, the political power of DK Shivakumar is not limited to the state only. The party leadership also sees him as one of the great national leaders of the future. If Congress has to challenge BJP in 2029, then a strong performance in Karnataka will be necessary and DK’s role in this will be considered decisive. In this matter, now TVK in Tamil Nadu can also prove to be an ally for Congress.

How much will be the impact on 2029 and assembly elections?

The combination of national politics and regional leadership is likely to become stronger in the coming years. For BJP, leaders like Yogi, Samrat and Shubhendu will be important in increasing the seat base in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. At the same time, for Congress, leaders like DK Shivakumar in Karnataka can strengthen the national strategy of the party.

The 2029 elections will not only be Modi versus the opposition, but will also see how national parties field strong regional faces in their respective states. These regional satraps can prove to be the most important political pillars to sail the electoral boat in many states.
