Modi government sacrificed the country and farmers in US-India trade agreement: Randeep Singh Surjewala

New Delhi. Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala held a press conference at the Congress office on Monday. During this he said that trade agreements are the path to economic progress. The basis of trade agreements is the mutual public interest of two countries on equal terms. Trade agreements can never be a path to slavery by sacrificing the country’s sovereignty. Both national interest and public interest cannot be sacrificed under the guise of trade agreements. Due to these reasons we also fought with the British.

He further said that Modi government sacrificed the country and farmers in the US-India trade agreement. Publicly played with India’s energy security. Modi government has raised serious questions on India’s digital autonomy and data privacy. Instead of standing firmly in defense of Indian interests, this helpless government compromised India’s sovereignty and self-reliance.

Also said, Modi government has put India’s interest at stake in the trade deal with America. In which three issues are most important, agriculture, energy security and terms of trade… In the first framework agreement of February 6, 2026, it has been agreed that India will open our market to American food and agricultural products without any import duty.

Randeep Singh Surjewala further said that the trade agreement will have a major impact on the farmers producing “cotton”. America signed a trade agreement with Bangladesh, in which it is clearly written that Bangladesh, after importing American cotton and yarn, will export the cloth and garments to America, there will be 0% duty in America.

On the contrary, there will be 18% duty on our exports, that is, India, whereas India is the largest exporter of textiles and clothing. If this happens, it will affect the textile industry of the entire country including Tirupur, Surat, Panipat, Ludhiana. But on February 12, 2026, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal publicly told the country that India will also get the same relief as Bangladesh if it imports cotton from America and exports textiles.

That is, now the Modi government has opened the door for free import of American cotton into India. Apart from this- Bangladesh imports about 50% cotton from India. But now the export of cotton from India to Bangladesh will also stop, which will be a double blow to our farmers. He further said, Piyush Goyal may not be telling but Modi government had started importing cotton from America to India even before the agreement.

Randeep Singh Surjewala said, according to the data, despite having cotton, India has imported cotton worth ₹ 3,428 crore from America in the year 2024-25. If this figure increases from ₹3,428 crore to ₹20,000 crore, what will happen to our cotton? This year, the MSP of cotton in India was ₹ 6100 per quintal, but cotton was sold at the price of ₹ 5045 per quintal. The question is – if American cotton is imported, what will happen to the cotton growing farmers of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka?
