Modi govt striving to make India 21st-century knowledge economy: Dharmendra Pradhan
New Delhi: At a press briefing held in New Delhi on Tuesday, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted on the transformations that the Indian education landscape has witnessed in the decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, “there has been a quantum jump in school infrastructure and facilities of schools in the last 10 years.” A simple comparison on basic infrastructure will put this in perspective — While 53 per cent of the schools in the country had electricity in 2013-14, a whopping 91.8 per cent of educational institutions have electricity in 2023-24. Apart from electricity, there has been an steep increase in other facilities like computers, library, and playground.
Pradhan reiterated the progress made when he quoted numbers — “While in 2013-14, only 7.1% of schools had internet connectivity, in 2023-24, 54% of schools will be connected to the internet. Today 100% of schools have girls’ toilets. We are moving towards almost 100% in cleanliness parameters,” he said at the conference held for media persons.
Holistic education aligning with NEP
The Indian education space has seen rapid transformation in terms of enhanced learning experiences as well as holistic development. The two have been key milestones in the National Education Policy and India has done well in meeting most of the features that have been prescribed by it. Pradhan reminded that, “Schools are not only centers of learning but also enablers of opportunity, skill, and empowerment for every child in the country.”
Speaking of enrolment in primary and secondary schools, the minister informed that school admissions have also gone up by an unprecedented margin. To meet with this growing demand, there is a strategy in place. Take a look at some of the achievements here:
- CBSE Schools have double in a decade, from 14,974 in 2014 to 30,415 in 2024
- Skill Education has also soared as vocational schools have witnessed a massive growth from 960 in 2014 to 29,342 in 2024
- Transparent, IT-Driven reforms with 100 per cent online admissions, transfers, and e-Office in KVS and NVS have also been achieved.
- Bharatiya Bhasha has been rightfully brought back to focus as textbooks available in 23 Indian languages, 126 multilingual e-Content released on DIKSHA platforms for regional students
- Textbook printing has tripled, with the NCERT printing over 15 crore textbooks for the next academic session
- Tracking every child is now possible with over 7 crore APAAR IDs generated and validated for monitoring learning outcomes

All this and more are markers that the education landscape under the aegis of PM Modi is constantly on a growth curve. Pradhan went on to elucidate on the core achievements in the higher education front as well.
