Modi’s phone call to Macron after Khamenei’s death, could India facilitate diplomacy?
After a long wait, India finally mourned the death of Iran’s Supreme Ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday. After that, Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron. The Prime Minister said in the X-Handle that the situation in West Asia was discussed between them. It should be noted that the position of India and France is almost the same regarding the 6-day war. Both countries have given a message to stop military operations and resolve the problem through talks.
America and Israel have been attacking Iran since last Saturday. Khamenei died early Sunday morning. Since then, Modi has spoken to eight heads of state in the Middle East over the phone. But the situation has changed since Wednesday. America destroyed an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. The warship came as a guest to conduct exercises with India. Such an attack on India’s ‘guest’ increases New Delhi’s discomfort. After that, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met the Iranian ambassador on Thursday. Expressed grief over the death of Khamenei. But New Delhi did not condemn the US-Israeli attack.
Modi spoke to Macron a few hours after the condolence. X Handel wrote, ‘I spoke with my friend President Macron. We are both concerned about the current situation in West Asia. That has been discussed. Efforts should be made to resolve the issues in that area through negotiation and diplomacy. We will work together towards the speedy return of peace and stability to the Middle East.’ Note that since the beginning of the war, India and France did not support either side. Both the countries requested to stop the war while maintaining neutral position.
Spoke with my friend President Emmanuel Macron today. We discussed our shared concerns over the evolving situation in West Asia and the need for a return to dialogue and diplomacy. We will continue to engage closely and coordinate efforts towards the early restoration of peace…

On the other hand, S. Jaishankar also spoke to Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the phone. India’s foreign minister shared the news on the X handle. However, the details of what was discussed between the two are not known. It is to be noted that Araghchi had expressed anger on the incident of destruction of Iranian warships in the Indian Ocean. Jaishankar’s phone call to repair the wound?
