Mohammad Yunus announced his resignation before Tariq Rehman’s swearing-in ceremony.
Mohammad Yunus, while addressing the nation in Dhaka on Monday, announced his resignation from the post of chief advisor to the interim government. This decision has come at a time when Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has got a clear majority in the recently held general elections in the country and its leader Tariq Rahman is going to form a new government. Yunus said in his farewell message that the interim administration is now handing over power to the elected leadership.
What did Yunus say in his address?
In his address, Yunus said that the objective of the interim government was to restore democracy, freedom of expression and civil rights in the country. The initiatives that have been started in this direction should be continued in the future also. He expressed hope that the new government will strengthen these values and take the country forward in the direction of stability and development.
Yunus returned to Bangladesh in August 2024 at a time when political instability had arisen after the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. At that time an interim government was formed, whose leadership was handed over to Yunus. Recalling that period in his address, he said that it was an important turning point in the history of the country, when youth and common citizens played a decisive role in the direction of change.
BNP achieved majority
In the recently held general elections, BNP won an overwhelming majority by winning 209 out of 297 seats. After this victory, Yunus congratulated BNP and its leader Tariq Rahman and formally completed the process of transfer of power. Tariq Rehman will take oath as the new Prime Minister on Tuesday. His swearing-in ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of the Parliament complex.
Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats in the elections. At the same time, Awami League was not allowed to participate in this election. This entire development is being seen as a major change in the politics of Bangladesh. With the change of power, the new government in the country is now expected to bring political stability and strengthen democratic institutions.
