Actually, experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami was last seen in the jersey of the Indian team during the 2023 ODI World Cup. After which Shami was not making a place in the team due to injury surgery and fitness related reasons. At the same time, when the team was announced for the T20I series against England, the fans were very happy to see Shami's name in it. But, the fans waiting to see Shami's bowling in Kolkata were disappointed in the first match. Captain Surya took the field with only one key fast bowler in the team.
Keeping Shami out was part of the strategy
India's victory: Captain Surya Kumar Yadav explained the reason for not giving a chance to Mohammed Shami. “We wanted to stick to our strengths,” he said. We had adopted the same strategy in South Africa also. Hardik took the responsibility of bowling with the new ball, which allowed me to include additional spinners in the playing eleven. These three spinners were performing brilliantly.”
Young batsman Abhishek, who played a brilliant innings of 79 runs against England in this match, said, “I think this is the decision of the team management and they considered it a better option keeping in mind the circumstances.” From this statement of both the players it became clear that keeping Mohammed Shami out was a strategic move.
