Shami has arguably been India’s number-two pace bowler across all formats after Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out with a knee injury since after the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He had a tournament to remember in that World Cup, being the highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps in just seven games.
However, soon after that competition, Shami underwent surgery to treat his long-standing knee injury. It has now been over a year, and the pacer has yet to represent India since the World Cup.
However, just about a year after he left the field, the UP-born pacer returned to professional cricket as he started playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. He was also a part of Bengal’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy side, taking his team to the final, where they lost to Baroda.
“Shami bowled 43 overs in the Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in November. Following this, he played in all nine games of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he also engaged in additional bowling sessions on the sidelines to build his bowling volume in order to get ready for the Test matches,” the BCCI statement read.

However, it appears that the 34-year-old is not fully recovered from his injuries. Following the SMAT, he exhibited minor swelling, and it is said the reason behind it is the increased bowling workload a little too quickly. The press release continued,
“However, his left knee has exhibited minor swelling due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload. The swelling is on the expected lines, owing to the increased bowling after a prolonged period.”
Based on this, the BCCI medical team has come to a decision to rule Mohammed Shami out of the remaining Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI medical team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. Consequently, he has not been deemed fit for consideration for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”
A few days ago, Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma enquired about Shami’s fitness. It now seems that he will have to work with the pacers he has at his disposal. Jasprit Bumrah has been brilliant but has shown signs of fatigue; Mohammed Siraj has been quite hot and cold in the series; Harshit Rana did not impress in the first couple of matches of the series; and Akash Deep has shown a lot of promise.
With the series standing at 1-1, the two remaining Australia vs India matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne and Sydney will not only determine the scoreline of this series but also the equation for the World Test Championship final in June 2025.
