The World Health Organization (WHO) had declared a public health emergency due to the ever-increasing Mpox cases. After the case surfaced, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has appealed to people returning from abroad to inform the health department and get treatment if they notice any symptoms.

In a social media post, he released a list of government hospitals across the state where arrangements have been made for the treatment and quarantine of people affected by Mpox. The minister also said that treatment is available in all medical colleges in the state. Along with this, the Health Department of Kerala has increased surveillance at the airports of the state. The Health Minister said that people coming from countries where the infection was reported have been instructed to report at the airport if they have any symptoms.

After the Mpox outbreak in 2022, Kerala had set a standard operating procedure. According to this, arrangements were made to quarantine the infected, take samples and provide treatment. Kerala Health Minister Veena George cautioned health workers handling samples from affected persons to strictly follow infection control precautions.

The Mpox virus was first identified in monkeys in 1958. Its first case in humans was reported in the 1970s. Although it was more common in African countries, it has now reached many Asian countries including the United States and the UK.
