Monsoon Rain Update: Relief from heat! Entry of Monsoon in Kerala is confirmed; Curiosity heightened by IMD’s forecast

Monsoon Rain Update in Marathi : As the citizens are shocked by the rising heat across the country, now there is a comforting news. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the probable date of arrival of monsoon in Kerala and expressed the possibility that monsoon will arrive on time or slightly earlier this year. Therefore, there are signs that the citizens who are suffering from severe drought will get relief soon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the expected date of arrival of Southwest Monsoon in Kerala in 2026 as May 26. This date is about six days earlier than the usual date of June 1. The arrival of monsoon rains is expected to bring relief from the intense heat in the south Indian states and create favorable conditions for sowing of kharif crops.

The IMD explained that the arrival of Monsoon in Kerala is considered as an important indicator of the advance of Southwest Monsoon over the Indian mainland. Also, this day marks the transition from the hot and dry season to the rainy season. As monsoons move northwards, temperatures may drop in various parts of the country.

According to the IMD, their predictions have been mostly accurate over the past 21 years. Only in 2015 did the forecast differ from the actual situation. The data for the last six years further strengthens the IMD’s credibility in forecasting seasonal rainfall.

2020: Actual Arrival June 1 (Estimated: June 5)
2021: Actual arrival June 3 (estimated: May 31)
2022: Actual arrival 29 May (estimated: 27 May)
2023: Actual arrival June 8 (estimated: June 4)
2024: Actual arrival May 30 (estimated: May 31)
2025: Actual arrival May 24 (estimated: May 27)

Estimate based on these 6 indicators

Minimum Temperature in Northwest India
Pre-monsoon rains in the southern peninsula
Outward Long-wave Radiation (OLR) over the South China Sea
Lower Tropospheric Winds in the Southeast Indian Ocean
OLR in Southwest Pacific Ocean Region
Lower Tropospheric Winds in the Northeast Indian Ocean
Based on the combined study of all these factors, the expected date of monsoon arrival in Kerala has been fixed on May 26.

Rain warning in Kerala

On May 15, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange rain warning for two districts of Kerala: Idukki and Malappuram. A yellow alert has been issued for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. It is clear from this that the rains are increasing in South India even before the arrival of Monsoon. According to meteorologists, the early arrival of monsoon in Kerala will bring down the temperature in many states of South India. This will be highly beneficial for sowing of kharif crops (like rice, maize, pulses etc.) and farmers will be able to sow the crops on time.
