Monty Desai becomes the new head coach of Canada national cricket team
Cricket Canada has made a major change in the coaching setup of its men’s cricket team and appointed Monty Desai as the new head coach. The Canadian team has been participating in various ICC tournaments for the last few years, but till now it has not been able to achieve much success in any major tournament.
Sports News: In an important announcement, Cricket Canada has appointed Indian coach Monty Desai as the new head coach of the men’s national cricket team. This move is being considered a major change towards strengthening the performance and structure of Canadian cricket. Monty Desai has over two decades of international coaching experience and has worked with many nations playing associate cricket. His appointment is being considered a strategic decision for Canada Cricket, aimed at making the team more competitive at the global level.
Strong experience in associate cricket
Monty Desai has previously worked with teams like Nepal, Afghanistan and United Arab Emirates (UAE). His contribution to Nepal cricket is considered particularly significant, where during his tenure the team achieved One Day International (ODI) status and achieved success in several ICC Qualifier tournaments. His experience with associate cricket teams has made him an expert in improving performance despite limited resources.
Association with IPL and franchise cricket
Apart from international cricket, Monty Desai has also been a part of the coaching setup of Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Here he worked on the development of young players and team strategy. His experience is now being considered very useful for an emerging team like Canada, where there is a need to groom young talent for the international level.
In recent years, the Canadian cricket team has been continuously participating in ICC tournaments, but has failed to achieve success on a large scale. The team participated in the T20 World Cup jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka earlier this year, but faced defeat in all the group stage matches.
Apart from this, Canada Cricket also had to face criticism after the investigation into allegations of corruption regarding a match related to the team was revealed in April. These incidents highlighted the need for improvement at both the administrative and performance levels of the team.
Cricket Canada’s response
Cricket Canada President Arvinder Khosa said on Monty Desai’s appointment that the organization’s main goal now is to strengthen the team’s professional identity. He said, “Our priority is to give Canada Cricket a strong and professional structure. Monty Desai’s experience and approach are in line with this goal. We are confident that under his leadership the team will move in the right direction.
