More change coming for Bucks as Doc Rivers steps aside

The Milwaukee Bucks are going to be searching for a new head coach once again.

According to multiple reports on Sunday night, including ESPN and The Athletic Doc Rivers has agreed to step aside as the team’s head coach following a disappointing 32-50 season that saw it miss the postseason for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

Rivers signed a $40M contract with the team when he was hired in 2024, and he still has one year remaining on that deal.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Rivers and the Bucks are discussing if he will move into an advisory role with the organization.

Doc Rivers’ brief tenure with Milwaukee Bucks was mostly disappointing

In Rivers’ two-plus seasons as the Bucks head coach, the team compiled a 97-103 record, losing in the first-round of the playoffs two times (2023-24 and 2024-25) before missing out entirely this season.

Injuries played a major role in a lot of those struggles, with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard missing significant time during his first two years with the Bucks, while Antetokounmpo played in only 36 games this season.

Even without the injuries, Rivers and the Bucks never seemed to be a great fit.

Along with another coaching change, which will be their fifth different head coach since the start of 2022-23 season, the Bucks also have to deal with the question of what happens with Antetokounmpo going into the offseason.

He has been the subject of trade rumors for more than a year now, and those rumors figure to reach a boiling point this offseason as he enters the final year of his contract. He does have a $62.7M player option after next season, but he figures to be a serious trade candidate if no new contract extension is signed early in the offseason. At this point, such an extension seems unlikely.

All signs point to a major offseason of change for the Bucks. That change started on Sunday as soon as the 2025-26 regular season came to an end.
