More than 100,000 outraged Argentina fans sign online petition demanding World Cup final replay

A rapidly growing petition on Change.org is now demanding that FIFA invalidate the result and order a full replay of the final.

Launched by an Argentine supporter named Gisela Sanchez, the campaign successfully surpassed 100,000 verified signatures over the weekend, The World reported.

The petition targets the performance of Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic during the intense clash in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.

Spain ultimately crushed Argentina’s dream of becoming the first back-to-back world champions since Brazil in 1962. The gritty encounter was decided in extra time, with Ferran Torres firing home the winning goal in the 106th minute to secure Spain’s second World Cup trophy.

Adding to the pain for Argentine fans, the match likely served as Lionel Messi’s final appearance at the World Cup.

Furthermore, the South American team had to play with 10 men after midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card and was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Spain’s Pau Cubarsi.

Sanchez’s online petition called Vincic’s officiating “controversial and corrupt,” claiming a bias that directly altered the game’s outcome and that several of his decisions went against Argentina.

The petition pointed to social media video clips, which it argues clearly expose a pattern of highly questionable refereeing decisions and urged world football’s governing body to investigate the match officials “with seriousness and transparency” before replaying the final.

Despite the large number of fans supporting the petition, the campaign won’t change the outcome of the final. Online petitions hold zero sporting authority and cannot legally force FIFA to overturn a verified tournament result.

No clear evidence has been presented to validate any claims of corruption or deliberate manipulation by the match officials or FIFA.

As of now, FIFA has not released any statement suggesting that the final will be reviewed or replayed.

Argentine football authorities have also refused to entertain the conspiracy theories or blame it on refereeing, Hindustan Times reported.

Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, urged supporters to accept the outcome gracefully, acknowledging that coach Luis de la Fuente and his team were simply the superior team in the final.
