More than 400 ceramic units in Gujarat will remain closed for three weeks.
450 factories have already been closed in Morbi
Morbi: Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the ceramic industry in Gujarat’s Morbi on Tuesday decided that about 430 of its units will not work for at least the next three weeks. An industry official gave this information. Due to the ongoing military tension between the US, Israel and Iran in West Asia, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, affecting gas supplies.
Propane and natural gas are used in the ceramic industry to fire furnaces and dry products, so supply disruptions have halted production. Morbi Ceramic Manufacturing Association President Manoj Arvadiya said that this collective decision was taken in a special meeting of the units related to the industry.
He said that first the units relying on propane gas were closed and later the units using natural gas also stopped work. He said that at present these units have decided to stop production from 10th to 15th April and do maintenance work on the machines during this period. He said operations would be resumed only when new gas supply becomes available.
According to officials, around 450 factories out of the total 670 in Morbi have already been closed and more units are likely to be closed in the coming days. People associated with the industry say that the situation will completely depend on when the ongoing conflict in West Asia ends and when the gas supply becomes normal.
