More than 6 crore voters removed in SIR process, 91 lakh names deleted from Bengal alone

The issue of Special Intensive Review (SIR) has been much discussed across the country for quite some time now. The Election Commission had started this process to improve the voter list. The opposition is continuously opposing this process and is attacking the Election Commission as well as the BJP. Amidst all the controversies, this process was completed on Friday and after the completion of the process, names of about 6.08 crore voters have been removed from the voter list of 9 states and 3 union territories. Names of about 91 lakh voters have also been removed from the electoral state Bengal.

 

After the release of the final voter list of Uttar Pradesh, the second phase of special intensive revision of voter lists has been completed. The final voter lists of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa have been published.

More than 6 crore names removed

According to the data shared by the Chief Electoral Officers of these states and union territories, when the SIR was announced on October 27 last year, there were names of about 51 crore voters in the voter lists of these 12 states and union territories. After this, names of many voters have been removed in the SIR process.

 

Now according to the latest data, after the completion of the SIR process, about 44.92 crore names are registered in the voter list of all these states and union territories. This simply means that 6.08 crore names have been removed. All these names have been removed from different states.

More than 2 crore names removed in UP

Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa told in the press conference that the final voter list has been published in Uttar Pradesh. After completion of the SIR process in Uttar Pradesh, there are a total of 13 crore 39 lakh 84 thousand 792 voters. Voters have increased by 84,28,767. However, compared to 2024, names of 2.06 crore voters have been deleted. Before the campaign, there were 15.44 crore voters in the state whereas now there are 13.40 crore voters left. That means the total number of voters has decreased by 13.24 percent.

Other states will be covered in the third phase

A total of 10 states and 3 union territories have been covered so far under the SIR process. In the first phase, the SIR process was conducted in Bihar and then in the second phase, the SIR process was conducted in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa.

 

Now a total of 17 states and 5 union territories are left for the third phase. The SIR process will be started in all these places after the ongoing assembly elections. Elections are to be held in Bengal this month and names of about 90.83 lakh voters of Bengal have been removed from the SIR.
