In the early 1980s, NASA initially planned to launch a modular space station called Freedom, aimed at competing with Soviet stations like Salyut and Mir. However, the project soon became too ambitious for a single nation to undertake. This led to a partnership with other space agencies, including Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), and CSA (Canada), transforming the ISS into a global endeavor.
On, November 20, 1998, the ISS was launched into space, primarily functions as to act as a staging ground for future space missions to the Moon, Mars, and asteroids.
