MS Dhoni hinted before IPL 2026, can leave number-7 and wear number-8 jersey

Tezzbuzz Desk- A social media post by Mahendra Singh Dhoni has created a stir in the cricket world. The former India captain and star player hinted ahead of IPL 2026 that he may ditch his long-known number-7 jersey and wear number-8.

Number-7 is not just a number but has become an emotion for Dhoni and his fans. This number is associated with the 7th of the seventh month of Dhoni’s birth. But now in the last phase of his IPL career, Dhoni has indicated to change this number.

MS Dhoni made his mark playing for Chennai Super Kings right from the first season of IPL. He wore the jersey of Rising Pune Supergiants only for two seasons, when CSK was banned. After retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni now plays only in the IPL. It is believed that IPL 2026 could be his last season as a player.

Dhoni said in his post, “Some numbers stay with you and number 7 has been one of them for me. But today, I am changing it to 8.” The post also included a video in which the number-7 jersey is visible, but someone takes it off and hangs the number-8 jersey. The jersey seen in the video is not yellow but blue, with tricolor stripes.

In the year 2023, BCCI had retired Dhoni’s number-7 jersey. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar’s number-10 jersey had also been retired. Dhoni’s record in the IPL is excellent—he scored 5439 runs in 242 innings in 278 matches, which included 24 half-centuries.

At present, fans are curious as to why Dhoni is making this big change in the last phase of his career. Dhoni said in the post that the reason for this decision will be revealed soon, which has further increased the curiosity of cricket lovers.
