Last Season for CSK Legend? Uthappa Predicts Big Change

Once again before the start of IPL 2026 MS Dhoni Discussions regarding its future have intensified. It is believed that this season could be Dhoni’s last season playing for Chennai Super Kings. Robin Uthappa, former Indian wicketkeeper batsman and a part of Chennai Super Kings, has also given a similar indication. He believes that this time Dhoni will be seen playing the role of ‘mentor-cum-player’ in the team and will not be as active on the field as before.

According to Uthappa, Dhoni IPL 2026 I can gradually start the process of separating myself from the team, so that Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is commanding the team, can emerge as a completely independent captain.

Why was there talk of Dhoni’s retirement?

  • Dhoni’s batting position has also slipped in the last few seasons. Whereas earlier he used to play in the middle order, now he is seen batting at number 7 or 8. This time too he is expected to play in the lower order.
  • Taking a big step before IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings have included Sanju Samson in the team. However, Uthappa believes that the captaincy should not be given to Samson, rather it is necessary to give time to Gaikwad.
  • Uthappa said that Gaikwad is captaining the team from 2024 and he should get a chance to prove himself by coming out of Dhoni’s shadow. If needed in future, Samson can be an option for captaincy.

How was Dhoni’s IPL career?

Dhoni’s IPL career has been very brilliant. He has scored 5439 runs in 278 matches and has made Chennai Super Kings champion 5 times. In IPL 2026, CSK will play its first match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Now all eyes are on whether this will prove to be Dhoni’s last season.
