Desk: The Madras High Court has ordered Dhoni to pay Rs 10 lakh for translation in a defamation case against a retired IPS officer. The Interpreter Section of the Madras High Court had observed that transcribing and translating the contents of the compact disc was a huge task which could take three to four months to complete. The case was filed by him against a retired IPS officer, some journalists and television channels for dragging his name in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) betting scam.

Justice R.N. Manjula said that the cost of transcription and translation of the material would have to be borne by the plaintiff alone, especially when the High Court interpreter had pointed out that it was a huge task which would take about three to four months even if an interpreter and a typist were specially appointed. The interpreter section had also estimated the cost at ₹10 lakh.
Therefore, the judge directed the cricketer to deposit Rs 10 lakh in the Chief Justice Relief Fund on or before March 12, 2026, to pursue the 12-year-old defamation case, which was delayed due to several interim suits. This case is filed by Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired IPS officer G. The case was filed against Sampath Kumar and Tezzbuzz Network.

12 years delay in the case
However, the trial got delayed for more than 12 years due to multiple applications filed by both the parties seeking different reliefs. In December 2023, a division bench of Justices SS Sundar (now retired) and Sundar Mohan held the retired IPS officer guilty of criminal contempt and sentenced him to 15 days of simple imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court put a stay on this punishment in 2024.
Dhoni had filed a contempt petition against the retired IPS officer for making derogatory remarks against the Supreme Court and the High Court while defending him in a defamation case. In July 2022, the then Advocate General R. Shanmugasundaram had allowed the cricketer to proceed with the contempt petition after being satisfied that the comments made by Mr Kumar in his written statement to the litigant amounted to bringing the court proceedings into disrepute.

Ultimately on August 11, 2025, Justice C.V. Karthikeyan ordered the commencement of the trial and appointed an Advocate Commissioner to record Dhoni’s evidence at a mutually agreed convenient place, as it was felt that insisting on the cricketer’s personal appearance, both for examination and cross-examination in the Master’s Court located within the High Court complex, could lead to chaos because he is a celebrity.
Sampath Kumar appealed against this order to Justice S.M. Subramaniam and Mohammed Shafiq, who dismissed the appeal in November 2025 observing that the cricketer’s appearance in the High Court would require extensive security arrangements and hence there was nothing wrong in appointing an Advocate Commissioner to record his evidence elsewhere.
