Muhammad Yunus kept avoiding media questions upon reaching New York

New Yorkन्यूयॉर्क : Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, who arrived in the US to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, faced protests outside his hotel in New York late Monday night (local time). He avoided answering questions when Indian media crew tried to ask him at the official hotel.

The video showed Yunus' security personnel trying to keep journalists away while they tried to ask questions to the Nobel laureate. Before his arrival at the official hotel in New York, protesters chanted “go back” slogans against Muhammad Yunus. The protesters also chanted slogans against Yunus over alleged attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.

The protesters chanted “Go back, step down, step down, step down” and held posters that read “Sheikh Hasina is our prime minister.” Yunus was sworn in as head of Bangladesh's interim government on August 8 after Sheikh Hasina fled the country and parliament was dissolved. Protesters alleged that the 84-year-old Nobel laureate came to power with “dirty politics”.

“Muhammad Yunus gained power unconstitutionally, illegally. He captured power with dirty politics and many people died. As of now, our elected PM Sheikh Hasina has not resigned. We humbly request the UN that she does not represent the Bangladeshi people here,” a protester Sheikh Jamal Hossain told ANI. Speaking to ANI, another protester DM Ronald said, “Our demand is peace. We believe in secular democracy. After gaining power by force, they started killing Hindus, Muslims and Christians, they are burning. All houses are burning, mosques are burning, Geyser Church is burning. Our people are not safe in Bangladesh.”

Another protester, Dr Rahman, said, “I am here to protest against the illegal, unelected person representing 117 million people of Bangladesh… He is not elected, he has been appointed by the students. He does not care about minorities or anyone… He has taken over the country illegally…” Yunus is scheduled to address the UNGA general debate on September 27. According to the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, he will have several high-profile meetings during the UNGA, including a meeting with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, reports Dhaka Tribune. According to Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hossain, the head of Bangladesh's interim government will meet the prime ministers of the Netherlands, Pakistan and Nepal, as well as several leaders, including the European Union president, US Secretary of State, UN Secretary General, UN Human Rights chief, World Bank president and USAID administrator. The foreign adviser said that during this meeting many decisions are taken at the last minute. Yunus will also attend a high-level event on the Rohingya crisis. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to meet Yunus.

Muhammad Yunus will also attend a high-level event 'Meet the Friends of Bangladesh'. A reception will be held to mark the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's membership in the United Nations, which will be hosted by Muhammad Yunus. On Monday, Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hossain met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Jaishankar told X, “Had a meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hossain in New York this evening. The talks focused on our bilateral relations.” (ANI)
