Mumbai Doctor Suggest Immediate Steps To Take Care
Eye injuries can occur unexpectedly and require immediate attention to prevent long-term damage. The eyes are delicate organs, and the severity of injury can range from minor irritation to potentially permanent damage. Whether caused by a foreign object, chemical exposure, or trauma, swift and appropriate first aid is crucial.
Dr. Parkar Mubashir Mohammed, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Kalyan suggest some immediate steps you should take in case of an eye injury:
1. Assess the situation:
Determine the type and severity of the injury. Avoid pressing or rubbing the injured eye as it can worsen the condition. Encourage the person to remain calm and keep their eye closed.
2. Flush with clean water:
If the injury is caused by chemicals or small debris, rinse the eye with clean, lukewarm water. Use an eye rinse station, a sink, or a sterile saline solution, and ensure the water flows away from the unaffected eye. Rinse for at least 15 minutes to remove harmful substances.
3. Do not remove embedded objects:
If an object is lodged in the eye, do not attempt to remove it. Cover the injured eye with a sterile dressing or a paper cup to prevent further contact. Secure it lightly to avoid additional pressure.
4. Protect the eye:
In cases of blunt trauma or cuts, avoid applying pressure. Gently cover the eye with a sterile cloth or shield to prevent further exposure or damage.
5. Avoid medications or ointments:
Do not apply any medications, ointments, or drops unless directed by a medical professional. Unsupervised use may aggravate the injury.
6. Seek immediate medical attention:
Regardless of the injury’s severity, consult an eye specialist or visit the emergency room immediately. Early treatment is critical to preserving vision.
Remember, eye injuries are emergencies. Acting promptly and following these first-aid steps can make a significant difference in preventing complications and ensuring recovery.
