Last week, a threatening message was received on the WhatsApp helpline of Mumbai Traffic Police demanding Rs 5 crore from the actor, after which the police registered a case and started investigation. Police tracked the number to Jharkhand and teams were sent to nab the accused, an official said. Another team had gone to Guwahati, he said.

Officials said on Tuesday that the police spread the net to trace the sender of the message, but the Mumbai Traffic Police received an “apology” from the same mobile phone number. It is noteworthy that actor Salman Khan had earlier received death threats from Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Suspected gang members had opened fire outside the actor's Bandra house in April this year. A few months ago, Navi Mumbai Police had uncovered a conspiracy to murder Khan by the Bishnoi gang, following which actor Salman Khan's security was beefed up.
