Mumbai Set To Become AI Hub With New OpenAI Office

OpenAI has announced plans to expand its presence in India by opening new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. This move will add to its current headquarters in New Delhi. The announcement was made during the India AI Impact Summit, a four-day event showcasing the country’s growing role in AI.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman talked about India’s importance in the company’s global strategy. He said India is leading in AI adoption, has strong local tech talent, and enjoys government support. Altman stated that OpenAI aims to build the infrastructure, skills, and partnerships needed to develop AI “with India, for India, and in India.”

India is now the second-largest user base for OpenAI. According to Altman, the country has more than 100 million active ChatGPT users every week. Indian students form the largest student user population in the world. OpenAI introduced a ChatGPT Go tier in India for less than $5, which was later made free for a year to adapt to the local price-conscious market.

“This infrastructure will enable OpenAI’s most advanced models to run securely in India, delivering lower latency while meeting data residency and security,” the report by OpenAI read.

Other major AI investments are also underway in India. Nvidia is building a GPU cluster in Mumbai to support large-scale AI workloads and has partnered with Larsen & Toubro to create a gigawatt-scale sovereign AI factory.

As per another report by Naukri, the majority of the AI-specific job openings have come from Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi. Mumbai is the source of 19.2 per cent of the jobs in AI.
