Rohit Sharma is set to return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after an absence of six years, with his previous appearance in the tournament coming in 2018. Mumbai open their Group C journey against Sikkim at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday, and Rohit has been included in the squad for the team’s opening two games, the next one scheduled against Uttarakhand on December 26. At present, the senior batter’s international duties are limited to the ODI format.
His selection is set to add significant weight to a Mumbai unit captained by Shardul Thakur. The move also comes in the backdrop of the BCCI’s recent push for centrally contracted players to stay connected with the domestic circuit whenever they are not on international duty.
Now focused solely on the ODI format after calling time on T20Is and Tests, Rohit Sharma’s stint in the Vijay Hazare Trophy should provide valuable match practice ahead of the New Zealand ODIs next month. He has been in good nick of late, compiling three half-centuries and a hundred in series against South Africa and Australia.
