Kushinagar. This news coming from Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh is not only about the brutal murder of a young man, but also about the broken trust of the victim’s family on law and order.

How did Nishant know that today would be the last journey of his life?

Nishant alias Shaktiman Singh, the only child of his parents, resident of Amarpur village, had left home on Wednesday just for a small errand. Little did Nishant, who was going to collect fertilizer for the farm, know that this would become the last journey of his life.

According to eyewitnesses, Faizal and Naushad along with their associates stopped Nishant and his friend in broad daylight in Kasya police station area. First there was a fight with the friend and when Nishant protested, he was attacked with knives. The attacks on his neck and stomach were so fatal that by the time he reached the hospital, he stopped breathing.

There was chaos in the village and family after the incident. After the postmortem, when the body reached the village around 10 am on Thursday, anger came out on the streets. Hundreds of villagers placed the dead body at the intersection and blocked it. The family clearly said that unless strict action is taken against the accused, the last rites will not take place.

Nishant’s mother’s pain was beyond words. He said-

“Just like my son was killed, let the accused be encountered. If this cannot happen then shoot us too.”

Considering the seriousness of the situation, police from 5 police stations and a company PAC had to be deployed on the spot. Markets remained closed, the atmosphere remained tense. After about 7 hours, ADM Vaibhav Mishra and ASP Siddharth Verma reached the spot. He assured the family that the culprits will not be spared.

Police had already arrested one accused Naushad and on Thursday, absconding accused Faizal was also arrested. After getting assurance of action against other people involved, the family agreed for the last rites.

Nishant was not just a name. That was the dream of farmer father Santosh Singh—who was preparing for army and competitive exams after 12th. A promising young man, who was dreaming of serving the country, has today become a file demanding answers from the system.

This matter again leaves a question-

Will justice be so swift that the victim’s family does not have to take to the streets? The real test of the law has now begun.
