Musang King, a renowned durian variety from Malaysia, has been ranked 19th on a list of the 26 best-rated fruits in Southeast Asia, as voted by readers of international food magazine TasteAtlas.

The magazine described Musang King as a fruit with “bright yellow flesh that is thick and custard-like,” noting its complex flavor profile, which combines sweetness with a hint of bitterness.

“Today, Musang King durians are primarily cultivated in Malaysia, particularly in the Pahang region. The fruit is celebrated for its premium quality and is also enjoyed in other Asian countries, most notably Singapore and China,” TasteAtlas added.

Musang King durians are typically harvested during Malaysia’s southwest monsoon season, with peak availability from June to August.

Due to its popularity among foreign tourists, Malaysia’s tourism authorities have recently introduced durian tourism packages. These packages allow visitors to pick and taste the fruit directly from orchards while exploring local tourist attractions.

Durian is primarily grown in tropical countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is distinctive for its large size, strong odor, and thorn-covered rind.

Mangosteen was named the best fruit in Southeast Asia, followed by coconut from Vietnam’s Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre and calamansi from the Phillipines.

According to TasteAtlasthe rankings are based on audience ratings, using a system that filters out bots and overly patriotic votes, with more weight given to knowledgeable users. The platform aims to promote local culinary excellence, highlight traditional dishes, and spark curiosity about foods that tourists may not have yet experienced.
