Musheer Khan ruled out of Irani Cup following a road accident in UP – Report

New Delhi: Young Mumbai batter Musheer Khan has been ruled out of the Irani Cup 2024 after suffering a fracture in a road accident on his way from Kanpur to Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The 19-year-old was reportedly said to travel with father Naushad Khan, who also happens to be his coach, to be part of the Irani Cup camp.

The recent accident means Musheer w0n’t be able to participate in the Irani Cup clash between reigning Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai against the Rest of India team. According to a report by Times of India, Musheer is also likely to miss the initial stage of the Ranji Trophy 2024, which starts on October 11.

“He didn’t travel with the Mumbai team to Lucknow for the Irani Cup. He was probably, travelling from Azamgarh with his father, to Lucknow when the accident happened,” a source was quoted as saying by Times of India.

The Mumbai Cricket Association hasn’t confirmed the development so far, but the report mentions that the state association is expected to name a replacement for Musheer soon in the Mumbai squad.

Can Mumbai manage without Musheer Khan’s services?

Mumbai batter Musheer Khan, who is the brother of India middle order Test batter Sarfaraz Khan, made his first-class debut for the state team in December 2022 against Saurashtra, though he played enough matches in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24.

The youngster scored 433 runs in five innings at an average of 50.88 with the help of two centuries and a fifty. Batting at No.3 for Mumbai, Musheer scored an flamboyant unbeaten 203 against Baroda in the quarterfinal, making him the youngest Mumbai player to hit a double-ton.

He was named in the India B squad for the Duleep Trophy 2024. He started the tournament with a splendid knock of 181, but failed to keep the consistency, amassing six runs in next four innings with two ducks involved.
